Greetings from Nutrition4Performance HQ
It seems that the weather didn’t get the memo that summer is in full swing. However, the athletics season is well and truly underway.
On the world stage Jaroslava Mahuchikh has broken the 37 year old high jump record, with a massive 2.10m. At the more lowly grassroots level, I seem to be spending my weekends getting drenched on the track infield somewhere. I seem to end up mostly either retrieving thrown implements or fighting with pole vault uprights.
The knock-on effect of this is that I don’t have may Saturday appointments available through the summer. If this means you can’t find an appointment that suits, then please email me with some suggested dates/time. I don’t promise I can accommodate, but I will see what I can do.
Eating well when out and about can be a challenge. The packed lunches provided for athletics officials are often based on the grab and go options (sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps and chocolate bars) that I advise against. These easy to ‘eat on the run’ options are heavy in refined carbs, sugar and the unholy trinity of starchy carbs + sugar + saturated fats. However, on Sunday, the ladies in the café at the Woodford Green track excelled themselves. They served up bowls of green salad, coleslaw, tomatoes, cucumber and plenty of fruit alongside the sandwiches. That was a really refreshing change, especially as I had failed to be organised enough to make my own lunch.
Whether you make your own lunch or rely on what you find out and about, if you start the day with a good breakfast (ie protein, fruit/vegetables and some good quality fats should make the majority of you plate), you are less likely to crave snacks before lunch.
My youngest finally finishes school for the summer next week, so I’m giving all you equally frazzled parents out there a chance to reset (yes, I’ve had the run of exams, school concerts, prom and school sports fixtures alongside the additional athletics load of my clan). I’m running a mindful eating challenge from 24th to 28th July. This is about slowing down and savouring food, and resetting how we think about eating. It’s free to join, drop me an email at julie@n4p.co.uk if you’d like to join in.
If you’d like some help changing your eating habits, or to find out how you can eat better on the run, book a no obligation call with me here.
So, here’s to hoping the rain stops sometime this week! Have a great week,
Julie
