What does a Nutritional Therapist do?

I’m often asked what a Nutritional Therapist does, and how is that different from what I do as a Nutritionist.

It’s a case of using different skills in different contexts.

As a BANT registered Nutritionist, I educate and advise on diet.  This may be in a group setting, or on a 1-2-1 basis.  Groups can be very effective for working towards a common goal.   Alongside education and advice, the community of a group helps with implementing changes and accountability.  The more those changes become embedded, the more effective they become.  And the more permanent.  For example, a small group of people who all want to reverse pre-diabetes before it evolves into something requiring a lifetime of medication will support each other and share their triumphs and challenges.  There is a lot to be gained from not going it alone.  How many New Year’s resolutions have you made over the years to eat this or not eat that, that have not made it past the first weekend in January?

As a Nutritional Therapist, I work with clients on a 1-2-1 basis.  This is usually supporting someone who is dealing with more challenging issues, such as a chronic condition of the variety that conventional medical treatments are not always effective for.  In this capacity I can use functional tests that are more wide ranging than tests a GP would do, where this is appropriate.  I can also recommend supplements to overcome nutrient deficiencies or poor absorption issues that in the first instance it may not be feasible to address through diet alone.  This is always a medium to long term collaboration.  It’s not the scenario where a one-off appointment and a list of recommendations would be either appropriate or effective. It takes many months or years for chronic conditions to emerge; it will equally take time and effort to reduce or reverse them.

I use coaching techniques in all my work, both as a Nutritionist and a Nutritional Therapist. I can provide as much education as I like, but enabling you to find ways to implement them that work for you is the key to making it effective.
